Is ‘work-life balance’ a term that seems unreal to you? Are you tired of juggling your career, home and kids, and are barely getting by?
Well, you are not alone. There are several women out there who share the same struggles.
The new-age woman wants to have it all – right from a meaningful career to a good family life. However, it is not always easy and may take a toll on you. And then, there is the eternal guilt of not giving enough time to kids and family. If you are in a similar situation, it is the right time to pause and take control of your life.
Here are a few tips that will make you wing everything, right from your eyeliner to your life.
How to Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance
In the daily struggle to manage everything, you can forget the most important person – You. Unless you are in the best shape both mentally and physically, you cannot deliver at work or provide for your family. It is time to focus on yourself and your good health. You can start by dedicating one hour a week for your me-time. You can use it to meet your girlfriends, pamper yourself with a spa or simply to read a book over coffee. Trust me, this one hour can work wonders by rejuvenating you.
Decide what’s important
It is impossible to attend every meeting and take your child to every playdate. Your life can become unbearably hectic if you try to do it all. Try to make three lists for your tasks – unavoidable, avoidable and avoidable if there is no time. Use the same strategy at work to give your time only to the most important tasks. This will considerably reduce your workload and gradually you will learn to prioritise what’s important.
Talk to your manager
If you are having trouble at work, try talking to your manager. Explore the option of flexible timings in your office. You can even consider part-time if money is not a problem. Several companies also offer work from home these days. You may consider this option once a week to reduce your travel time. You may notice an increase in your productivity if your manager can offer any of these.
Learn to say no
Several women find it difficult to say no. It is not your problem but something that has been ingrained in our minds. We carry the same attitude at work and more often than not, get burdened with tasks that are outside the purview of our jobs. If this happens too frequently with you, it is time to put your foot down and say no. Do not worry about how others will react. There was a lady at my work who would leave office at sharp 6 O’ Clock when the rest of the staff would sit till 8. She was so particular that people eventually accepted it as her working style. Another step that may help you significantly is to forget about work when you leave office. Try not to accept any phone calls after office hours. This will help in drawing a line between your professional and personal life.
Connect with your children
In this time of social media, real and meaningful connections are becoming rare. If you spend your free time scrolling down your Instagram feed, you are losing on your valuable time with your children. Try to connect with them and know what’s happening in their lives. Time flies quickly and soon, they will be on their way out. Make it a habit to call your child daily from office. I have seen people blocking their calendars so that they can give undivided attention to their kids.
Do not forget your spouse
Lastly, focus on your relationship with your husband. You can both get up early to give each other undivided time. Go on a walk or chat over coffee in the mornings. After all, it is these conversations that can keep you two going. If possible, try to go on a date, at least twice a month. Rekindle your romance and revisit your courting years to revive your love.
